Since I listened to the cousin recording, I have been wondering where she got this ornamental style of singing. Ancestrally it stems from gospel and scat singing. How did it get so prevalent? Of this season's Idol singers, Anwar was the most into it--he was just terrible at it. Vonzell does a discreet riff every once in a while--it's a great way to push applause.
But where did this come from? I've been told that Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera are the people to listen to.
