3-Oct-15 is Verdi's Il Trovatore This stars Anna Netrebko who is fresh from an overwhelming triumph in this role in Salzburg. Yonghoon Lee is her Manrico and Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings the Count Di Luna. Dolora Zajick has been singing Azucena at the Met since 1988 and is still fabulous in the role. Marco Armiliato conducts Sir David McVicar’s not new production which was previously seen in HD in 2011. Azucena and Di Luna are the same as last time.
17-Oct-15 is a new production by Bartlett Sher of Verdi's Otello with Aleksandrs Antonenko as Otello; Sonya
Yoncheva sings Desdemona, Željko Lučić, who recently was Rigoletto and Macbeth, is Iago. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts.
31-Oct-15 is Wagner's Tannhäuser with Johan Botha in the title role, Eva-Maria Westbroek as Elisabeth, Peter Mattei sings Wolfram, and Michelle DeYoung is Venus in the first HD for this opera. James Levine conducts.
One of Wagner's greatest achievements in still my favorite rendition: "Oh evening star, greet her soul as it passes by."
21-Nov-15 is Berg's Lulu with Marlis Petersen as Lulu, Susan Graham as the Countess, Daniel Brenna as Alwa and Johan Reuter is Dr. Schön. This is a new production by William Kentridge who also created the production for The Nose [you could tell]. It will be conducted by James Levine. I think there is probably going to be symbolism.
16-Jan-16 is Bizet's Pearl Fishers in a new production by Penny Woolcock with Diana Damrau, tenor Matthew
Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, an excellent cast. The famous duet should be fabulous. The conductor is Gianandrea Noseda. This opera hasn't been presented at the Met for 100 years.
30-Jan-16 is Puccini's Turandot with Stemme, Hartig, Berti. This is the Met's venerable Zeffirelli production which has been playing at the Met since 1987. It appeared before in HD with Maria Guleghina. The conductor
is Paolo Carignani.
5-Mar-16 is Puccini's Manon Lescaut with Kristine Opolais and tenor Jonas Kaufmann, same cast as London and Munich, both of which I have seen. The new production is by Sir Richard Eyre who designed the Marriage of Figaro from last year, and thankfully did not design either the London or Munich productions of Manon Lescaut. The conductor
is Fabio Luisi.
2-Apr-16 is Puccini's Madama Butterfly with Kristine Opolais and Roberto Alagna. It's curious that the Verdi operas and the Puccini operas are bunched together. Perhaps this is for Opolais.
16-Apr-16 is Donizetti's Roberto Devereux. Sondra Radvanovsky will sing all three Donizetti Queens in a single season at the Met, and curiously, all three are in productions by David McVicar. The other 2 are not simulcast, so you will have to travel to see all three. Matthew Polenzani, Elīna Garanča and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien complete the cast. The conductor is Maurizio Benini.
30-Apr-16 is Strauss's Elektra with Nina Stemme, Waltraud Meier, Adrianne
Pieczonka and bass-baritone Eric Owens, a truly great cast. [I was just complaining about not seeing Eric Owens.] This is a new production by Patrice Chéreau who has died. Conductor
