Top Twelve New Operas

This means new to me.  If I saw the opera before I started blogging, it won't appear here.  This is a work in progress.

Strauss's Die Liebe der Danae in Berlin,
Il matrimonio segreto by Domenico Cimarosa at CSUS,
Les Indes galante, an opéra-ballet by Jean-Philippe Rameau streamed from Munich,
Thomas Adès' Powder her Face at West Edge,
Handel's Agrippina at West Edge,
Hector Berlioz' Béatrice et Bénédict streamed from Glyndebourne,
Bright Sheng's Dream of the Red Chamber from San Francisco Opera,
Stockhausen's Donnerstag aus Licht streamed from Basel,
Eliogabalo by Cavalli streamed from Paris, and
Sancta Susanna by Paul Hindemith in Paris.

2015 are:
Tchaikovsky's Iolanta from the Met,
Donizetti's Poliuto streamed from Glyndebourne,
Rossini's La Scala di Seta from a DVD,
the movie version of Weill's Die Dreigroschenoper from YouTube,
Verdi's Giovanna d'Arco streamed from Milan,
The Wiz on TV and
Hair at the Music Circus. Operas that were actually new for everyone are:
Benjamin's Written on Skin from a DVD,
Tutino's La Ciociara from the San Francisco Opera, and
Kaminsky's As One at West Edge, In December I saw
Getty's Usher House and
Debussy's La Chute de la Maison Usher. The first three were theatrically interesting but perhaps not musically memorable.

We will start with things that are not actually new but were new to me:

Die schweigsame Frau by Strauss streamed,

This year I only traveled as far as San Francisco.

Barber's Antony and Cleopatra was seen on YouTube.
Barber's A Hand of Bridge was live in Sacramento.
Bucci's Sweet Betsy From Pike was live in Sacramento.
Barab's A Game of Chance was live in Sacramento.
Verdi's Les Vêpres siciliennes was streamed from London.
Shostakovich's The Nose, HD from the Met.
Spontini's La Vestale was on YouTube.
Picker's Dolores Claiborne was a live world premier from SFO
Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricie was streamed from Glyndebourne.
Rossini's La Donna del Lago was streamed from the Met.
Adamo's The Gospel of Mary Magdalene was live at SFO.
Gasser's The Secret Garden was live in Berkeley.
Golijov's Ainadamar was live in San Francisco.
Humperdinck's Königskinder was a DVD with Jonas Kaufmann.
Glass' The Perfect American was a stream.
Donizetti's Maria Stuarda was HD from the Met.

Most of the DVDs this year were purchased. I traveled to Santa Fe.

Glass's Einstein on the Beach was live in Berkeley.
Heggie's opera Moby-Dick was live at SFO.
Rossini's Maometto Secondo was live in Santa Fe.
Szymanowsky's King Roger was live in Santa Fe.
Berlioz' Benvenuto Cellini was a DVD
Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur was a DVD with Gheorghiu and Kaufmann.
Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi was live streamed from Munich with Netrebko.
Paisiello's Nina, o sia la pazza per amore was a DVD from Zurich with Cecilia Bartoli
Rossini's Otello was a DVD from Zurich with Cecilia Bartoli.
Harbison's The Great Gatsby was live in San Francisco.

This year I traveled to Santa Fe

Handel's Rodelinda live in HD from the Met.
Catán's Il Postino, was a world premier performances on television.
Handel's Serse  (live at SFO).
Turnage's Anna Nicole was a DVD.
Theofanidis's Heart of a Soldier was a live world premier at SFO.
Thomson's Four Saints in Three Acts was live in San Francisco.
Menotti's The Last Savage was live in Santa Fe.
Vivaldi's Griselda was live in Santa Fe.
Purcell's The Fairy Queen was a DVD from Glyndeourne.
Rossini's Le Comte Ory was HD from the Met.
Vivaldi's Ercole sul Termodonte was a DVD


I stayed at home this year.

Halévy's Clari was a DVD

Rossini's Armida was HD from the Met.
Adès' The Tempest was a DVD.  I liked it better when I head the HD from the Met.
Krása Brundibár, was live in Sacramento.
Frankel's Grey Gardens musical was a DVD

This year I went to Santa Fe and southern California.

Webber's Cats musical live at the Music Circus.
Moravec's The Letter world premier live in Santa Fe.
Gluck's Alceste live in Santa Fe.
Footloose musical live in San Juan Capistrano.

This year I traveled to Zurich and New York.

Massenet's Thais was HD from the Met.
Korngold's Die Tote Stadt (live at SFO).
Wallace's Bonesetter's Daughter (live at SFO). This is new to everyone
Handel's Rinaldo live in Zurich.
Handel's Ariodante (live at SFO).
Paulus's The Village Singer was live in Sacramento.
Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges was live in Berkeley.
Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George was live in New York.
Prokofiev's The Gambler was live at the Met though 1/2.

Schubert's Fierrabras was a DVD with Jonas Kaufmann.

This year I spent 4 months in London. When I returned home, I began renting DVDs from my local library.

Rossini's Il Viaggio a Reims was on DVD.
Saariaho's L'Amour de Loin was on DVD.
Adams' Doctor Atomic was live at SFO.  This is new to everyone.
Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea with Maria Ewing was on DVD..
Verdi’s Stiffelio was on Video.
Britten's The Rape of Lucretia (live in San Francisco)
Susa's The Dangerous Liaisons was on Video. 
Giordano's Fedora was on DVD.
Barber's Vanessa was on DVD and starred Kiri te Kanawa.
Halévy’s La Juive was on DVD.
