A surprising number of things are moving from San Francisco to New York (**).
October 9
Wagner’s Das Rheingold
James Levine; Wendy Bryn Harmer, Stephanie Blythe, Patricia Bardon, Richard Croft, Gerhard Siegel, Bryn Terfel, Eric Owens, Franz-Josef Selig, Hans-Peter Kšnig.
The big event here is that Bryn will sing Wotan.
October 23
Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov
Valery Gergiev; Ekaterina Semenchuk, Aleksandrs Antonenko, Oleg Balashov, Evgeny Nikitin, René Pape, Mikhail Petrenko, Vladimir Ognovenko.
René Pape as Boris is not to be missed. And Valery Gergiev is no slacker.
November 13
Donizetti’s Don Pasquale
James Levine; Anna Netrebko, Matthew Polenzani, Mariusz Kwiecien, John Del Carlo.
At the Met Anna made her first big splash here. We went mad for her in San Francisco long before this.
December 11
Verdi’s Don Carlo
Yannick Nézet-Séguin; Marina Poplavskaya, Anna Smirnova, Roberto Alagna, Simon Keenlyside, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Eric Halfvarson.
Roberto does Verdi.
January 8
Puccini’s La Fanciulla Del West**
Nicola Luisotti; Deborah Voigt, Marcello Giordani, Juha Uusitalo.
This opera premiered at the Met 100 years ago.
February 26
Adams’s Nixon in China
John Adams; Kathleen Kim, Janis Kelly, Robert Brubaker, Russell Braun, James Maddalena, Richard Paul Fink
This is a recent addition to the schedule.
February 26
Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride**
Patrick Summers; Susan Graham, Plácido Domingo, Paul Groves, Gordon Hawkins.
March 19
Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor
Patrick Summers; Natalie Dessay, Joseph Calleja, Ludovic Tézier, Kwangchul Youn.
Natalie is getting her turn on HD. It's only fair, but for me it's too soon to be showing this again.
April 9
Rossini’s Le Comte Ory
Maurizio Benini; Diana Damrau, Joyce DiDonato, Susanne Resmark, Juan Diego Flórez, Stéphane Degout, Michele Pertusi.
This will be a much anticipated new opera for me with a strong cast.
April 23
Strauss’s Capriccio
Andrew Davis; Renée Fleming, Sarah Connolly, Joseph Kaiser, Russell Braun, Morten Frank Larsen, Peter Rose.
It was inevitable.
April 30
Verdi’s Il Trovatore**
James Levine; Sondra Radvanovsky, Dolora Zajick, Marcelo Álvarez, Dmitri Hvorostovsky.
This will give me a chance to finally see Dmitri.
May 14
Wagner’s Die Walküre
James Levine; Deborah Voigt, Eva Maria Westbroek, Stephanie Blythe, Jonas Kaufmann, Bryn Terfel, Hans-Peter König.
Bryn again as Wotan and Jonas Kaufmann as Siegmund-also much anticipated.
Missing:
Joyce DiDonato singing the composer in
Ariadne auf Naxos.
William Christie making his Met debut in
Cosi fan Tutte.
Pelléas et Mélisande. One understands.
Queen of Spades with Karita Mattila. Perhaps she hasn't earned a place in the HD series.
Rigoletto. I was just complaining about never getting to see
Rigoletto. Instead endless performances of
Don Carlo are thrown in my path.
Matthias Goerne and Waltraud Meier in
Wozzeck.
